Musa Al Khawarizmi
His full name is Abu Abdullah Mohammad Ibn Musa Al Khawarizmi. He was born around 780 AD on an island near the Amu Darya in the Arabian Sea in Soviet Russia. He played a major role in Arithmetic, Algebra, Geography, Astronomy, Geometry. But he is most famous for algebra. It is known from his book ‘Al Jibar Wal Muqabila’ that he was a devoted Muslim. Al-Khawarizmi took a job in Caliph Ma’mun’s vast library. This is probably where he became attracted to science. By studying with infinite patience, he became acquainted with all the subjects of science.
He was a world famous mathematician. He took the mathematical knowledge of his time to an unimaginably richer level.
Besides being a mathematician, he was also a notable astronomer. His knowledge of geography surpassed excellence. He was the father of Algebra. He first mentioned algebra in one of his books. The name of the book is ‘Al Jabar Wal Muqabila’.
He translated many Greek and Indian texts on science into Arabic. He wrote a book on arithmetic, which was later translated into Latin. It was under him that Algebra became richer in later times. Al-Khawarizmi’s principles of mathematics are at the root of the development and discoveries in various branches of science that have been made possible with its help up to the present era. Algebra, the English name of Algebra, originates from his book ‘Kitab Al Jibr Wal Muqabila’.
