The plant is being constructed on the banks of the Padma River, 160 km from Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. The nuclear power plant will consist of two Generation III+ VVER-1200 reactors, considered among the most modern and safest in the world. In 2023, the first batch of nuclear fuel was delivered to the plant from Russia.
A dedicated cargo port was built on the Padma River specifically for the plant’s construction. Construction materials and equipment from manufacturing plants are transported to the ports of St. Petersburg and Novorossiysk, then shipped to the Mongla seaport in Bangladesh. From there, they are loaded onto river vessels, which travel upstream along the Padma directly to the construction site.
Approximately 4,500 people are involved in the construction of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, with one-third being Russians and the rest comprising Bangladeshis and representatives from other countries, including France, Germany, and India. At the peak of construction, the workforce on the site is expected to reach 12,000 people.
