Radioisotopes are radioactive and they spontaneously emit radiation, a form of energy consisting of particles. As a radioactive element emits radiation, its nucleus changes into the nucleus of a different, more stable element. This process is called radioactive decay.
For example, the radioactive nucleus of one isotope of uranium, U-235, decays over time into Lead (Pb- 207).
