All personnel in each station of fire service and civil defense are divided into several units. This is basically done so that if there is a fire in multiple places at once, each unit can fight the fire at different places.
A unit usually has 12 members. Ambulance and water tanker drivers are also usually included in the 12.
A unit of 12 is again divided into two units of 6 each. When there is a fire somewhere, 6 people from a unit go there on the 1st call. If those 6 think more people are needed to control the fire then they make a 2nd call and then the remaining 6 are dispatched. But it is often seen that almost everyone goes to the accident site after knowing the details in any 1st call.
Each unit has a senior officer and another team leader. Also, another team at the fire station coordinates the field staff.
