Singapore and Zurich topped the list of the world’s most expensive cities this year. It is followed by Geneva, New York and Hong Kong.
The EIU said prices of more than 200 goods and services rose by an average of 7.4 percent annually in local currency, down from last year’s record 8.1 percent rise but still significantly higher than the 2017-21 trend.
Singapore topped the list for the ninth time in 11 years due to high prices in several categories. In addition, Singapore has the highest vehicle cost in the world due to strict government controls on the number of cars in the city. The city is also the most expensive for clothing, groceries and alcohol. Spending in Zurich is high on groceries, household goods and entertainment.
Geneva and New York are joint third on the list. Hong Kong is in fifth place, Los Angeles, another American city, is in sixth place. Seventh is Paris, eighth is Copenhagen and Tel Aviv, and tenth is San Francisco. According to the EIU, the trend of commodity price increase in Asia is comparatively lower than other regions of the world.
The survey results also revealed the 12 least expensive cities in the world. In this list, the names of three Asian cities appear, but none of the cities in Bangladesh got the title of ‘cheap’.
Among the 12 least expensive cities in the world, two from India, one each from Sri Lanka and Pakistan are named in the survey. The Indian cities in this list are Ahmedabad and Chennai. The cities of Sri Lanka and Pakistan are Colombo and Karachi respectively.
