Characteristics of sound wave are-
• Sound is a mechanical wave because sound waves are caused by the vibration of objects.
• It requires an elastic medium for circulation.
• A sound wave is a longitudinal wave because the direction of flow of this wave and the direction of vibration of the particles in the medium is in the same direction.
• The velocity of sound waves depends on the nature of the medium, its velocity is lower in air, higher in liquid, and higher in solid.
• The speed of sound depends on the temperature and humidity of the medium.
• The intensity of sound is proportional to the square of its propagation like other waves. That is, if the propagation of the wave is more, the intensity of the sound will be higher and if the propagation of the wave is less, the intensity of the sound will be less.
• Like any wave, sound waves can be reflected, refracted, and superimposed.
