The answer lies in the composition of milk. When these young whales are ready to feed, the mother whale releases her milk directly into the water while her baby is near her. But because whale milk contains so much fatty content, it does not dissolve in water and does not mix with water.
Instead, this thick and sticky form of milk floats separately in the water so that the baby whale can eat it.
