The word hijra comes from the Arabic word hijrat or hijri. From, which literally means change or Migrate or Transfer. In continuation of this, a special type of physical disabilities in our country is called hijras, they are created mainly due to physical gender defects.
Their main problems are – their gender does not have specific characteristics of women or men. Some have no sex-determining organs. Depending on these, they can be divided into several categories. Hijras who are physically male but mentally female are called akua, other hijras are called zenana, and man-made or castrated men are called chinni.
The scientific explanation of why hijra occurs is that a girl child is born from XX pattern eggs and a boy child is born from XY pattern. Chromosome patterning at the stages of fetal maturity results in testes in boys and ovaries in girls. Testes secrete male hormones androgen and ovaries estrogen. In this case, fertilization and division during embryo development lead to several abnormal patterns. For example XXY or XYY. This results in the birth of transgender children with different structures.
