In the Middle East about 10 million years ago there was a sea called the Tethys Sea, and many rivers. There was a lot of marine life and marine plants. And there were many forests and animals around the rivers. Then due to tectonic plate movement, those seas and rivers dried up and the whole area was covered with desert sand. That’s why those organic materials have been buried under the ground for millions of years and turned into petroleum due to pressure and heat.
