We all know about these three different states of matter solid, liquid, and gas. But beyond these three states, there can be a fourth state of matter called plasma. We know that the number of positively charged protons in the nucleus of a molecule or atom has the same number of negatively charged electrons outside. That is why the collective charge of a molecule or atom is neutral or zero. But we can make any atom negatively or positively charged with electrons or extra electrons. We call them ions. Plasma is an ionized gas in which the number of free electrons and positive ions is approximately equal.
Gases can be transformed into plasma by intense heat. Even applying a strong electric field can create plasma. Plasma is produced inside tube lights at home. The bright advertisements seen in neon lights also contain plasma. The electric light seen during lightning is also called plasma, and the matter between distant stars is also plasma. We currently use nuclear energy by splitting heavy nuclei through fission. Fusion attempts to use plasma to create energy by combining light nuclei and is now an important area of physics research.
